Jack Ma stepped down as Chairman of Alibaba today, handing over the role of current CEO to Daniel Jiang. The transition was announced a year ago.
Ma will continue to serve on the board of Alibaba until its annual general meeting of shareholders next year. He also remains a lifelong partner of Alibaba Partnership, a group made up of senior management of the Alibaba Group of companies and affiliates, which he is entitled to nominate (and in some situations appoint) to a simple majority of its board. Ma said in last year's announcement that he planned to make his departure from the Alibaba Group very gradual: "The only thing I can promise everyone is this: Alibaba was never about Jack Ma, but Jack Ma will forever belong to Alibaba. "
Ma left Alibaba's CEO in 201
One interesting fact about the day Ma chose to retire as chairman is that it is Teacher's Day in China. Ma is a former English teacher who still carries the nickname "Master Ma" and said she plans to spend time on educational philanthropy.
