Urban Meyer is meeting with the Jaguars today for their vacation as head coach.
No deal is inevitable and the team has not completed interviews with other candidates for head coach, reports NFL Network.
Mayer has been identified since before Doug Marone was fired as a potential next Jaguar head coach. Although Mayer has no experience in the NFL at all, he is one of the best coaches in college of all time. He won national championships in both Florida and Ohio, and his victory rate of .853 is the best in the big football college of any coach whose career began after World War II.
If Meyer takes over the Jaguars, speculation will immediately turn to what Meyer would like to do with the first overall pick in the NFL draft in 2021. Although Clemson’s quarterback Trevor Lawrence was widely considered the clear first choice, Meyer could to be the only coach to think of Ohio quarterback Justin Fields. Meyer has never coached Fields, but Meyer has stayed close to the Ohio program and has repeatedly praised Fields not only as a player on the field, but also for his leadership and character.
Mayer retired from Ohio two years ago, citing health reasons, but before that he retired from Florida, citing health reasons, and that didn’t stop him from training for long. If Meyer thinks he can win in Jacksonville, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he gets to work.
