Johnson stated that the charges filed in the formal complaint signaled a precedent that would weaken the presidential power.
"You know that future presidents will find it very difficult to have a frank conversation with a world leader because now we have set a precedent for expiring transcripts, the weakening of executive privilege is not good," Johnson said on Sunday at "Meet the Press "on NBC.

Johnson, Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who travels to Ukraine as part of a bipartisan aid team rejected claims at the center of the impeachment investigation that Trump was refusing assistance in return for Ukrainian officials to launch investigations that would hinder the 2020 elections.

Murphy, speaking to Meet The press on Sunday also said there was a "blackmail campaign," but added that he was not aware it was happening when he met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in September.
" The president has been trying to use the power of his cabinet to influence the upcoming elections, "Murphy said.
