Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct the fourth movie set in the world of The Matrix, with Keanu Reeves and Kari-Anne Moss recreating their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute the film globally. Warner Bros. Group Chairman Toby Emerich made the announcement on Tuesday.
"We couldn't be more excited to re-enter the Matrix with Lana," Emerich said. "Lana is a true visionary – the only and original creator of creative films – and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in the Matrix universe."
In addition to Wachowski, the screenplay was written by Alexander Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski also produced with Grant Hill. Sources say the film is set to launch in early 2020.
Warner Bros. has been trying to find a way to get back into this universe over the last few years, but hold on to the production rights of who owns what slows development. The first" Matrix "had its 20th anniversary this year, marked by special screenings in the selection AMC locations starting August 30.
