Kentucky vs. Michigan State Score, Withdrawal: Tyrese Maxey Stars in Debut as No. 2 Wildcats Top # 1 Spartans

Michigan's state in the basketball standings can only last one week. After entering the opening night team as the No. 1 in sports for the first time in program history, the Spartans fell to No. 2 Kentucky 69-62 in the second game of the Classics Championship.

It was an excellent performance by Kentucky that led to the No. 1 team having suffered their first loss in their first game. The Wildcats defense stifled MSU in the first half, holding them to just 24 points while forcing 10 turnovers. Offensively, Britain played well ̵

1; when it turned to freshman Tyrese Maxey, it turned out to be great. Maxi finished with two points shy of freshman freshman entry in the UK with 26 points, 15 of which came in the second half. The top three of them came when it mattered the most.

Maxi is ahead of Michigan State star Cassius Winston, who enters the season as a favorite in the preseason winning National Player of the Year honors. Winston scored 21 points and added four assists, but he flirted with a foul and failed to find a rhythm that could allow him to take the big stage. He finished as the only MSU player to finish in double figures.

CBS Sports was with you all the way to fully cover Tuesday's game from Madison Square Garden with our live blog below. If you have trouble viewing the blog, please click here.

1. Tyrese Maxey is a treat

TREATMENT. That was great. Borderline historic, even. Maxi, a true freshman, dropping 26 points from the No. 1 team in college basketball was quite a way to limit the first night of the season at college basketball.

Listen, I knew Maxie would be good. I think for a long time he will lead the UK in points and be a fun guard. However, I did not think that he would come off the bench and go completely nuclear. This was a freshman playing as an adult. That alone would be a great show, if not the toy that made her look great.

2. Michigan State was unable

to chalk this up until the first game of jitter, or damn it, a Kentucky loan that did a great job of interrupting any flow that Michigan State tried to establish. Whatever you want to use, it's clear that Michigan State is just out of sync all night. He left early, then fought back, then rebounded and fought again in the second half before falling behind late. It was a roller coaster – not the adjective you usually use to describe the performance of a team from preseason No. 1.

However, it is possible that the adjective you use to describe a team from a pre-series # 1 without a vital piece. Senior guard Joshua Langford remains indefinitely with a leg injury and time will tell when – or if – he will return. Last season, MSU made it to the final four without him in the lineup, but if he has one in it, he will no doubt give Sparti a reassuring presence, which he seemed to miss tonight. Which brings us to our next point …

3. Michigan State needs the second option

I have zero doubts, Michigan State will recover from this. None. Tom Itzzo's coaching teams are coping with the times, and if a seven-point loss to Team 2 in America is the lowest point of the season, then there will be a whole heck of a lot of peaks. But what is clear after this game is that Cassius Winston will need help. He was the only Spartans player to score in double digits, and at night MSU players, who weren't named Cassius Winston, ended up shooting 17 of 44.

That's the point where a single-game sample size didn't tells us a lot because it's easy to say that MSU doesn't have a second option. In time, I expect the great man Xavier Tillman to appear as this man, with Aaron Henry also agreeing to the possibilities. We are waiting to see who steps up, but from the small sample size we have, it should happen soon. Winston is a great player on a great team, but Winston himself can't do everything … not if Sparti will reach the high expectations set for him. Kentucky State Updates v. Michigan
