LA County Rediscovery: COVID-19 Vaccine, Mask, Test Rules

Los Angeles County is looking forward to its full opening on June 15. But despite the excitement, it will not be a full return to normal before the pandemic.

Here are five things to expect as LA County opens up completely.

There may be a higher risk of outbreaks in unvaccinated people

California officials have signaled that they will end the requirement to wear masks for fully vaccinated people on June 1

5. But there are also expectations that unvaccinated people may break rules that usually instruct them to continue wearing masks.

If they start removing their masks in close contact with other unvaccinated people and vaccination levels are not high enough to stop outbreaks, more unvaccinated people may be at higher risk of becoming infected with COVID-19.

Getting a coronavirus test will become even more important for the unvaccinated

“Because we’re starting to mix more with people outside our households, testing is really one of the best ways to stop outbreaks before they start,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of public health in Los Angeles County. “This will be an essential part of our strategy, especially after June 15.”

Ferrer recommends that you test yourself in the following situations:

• When someone comes down with signs or symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of the vaccination status. (It is extremely rare for a fully vaccinated person to experience symptoms of COVID-19 – only 0.03% of the 3.3 million Los Angeles County residents who were fully vaccinated on May 7 later were positive for coronavirus. Only 0.002% were hospitalized.)
• Unvaccinated people who find that they have been in close contact with someone who has been confirmed to have COVID-19.
• Unvaccinated people who have been potentially exposed to the coronavirus.

“So if you’re unvaccinated and you’ve spent time indoors around a lot of people who don’t wear masks, get tested – whether you’ve had symptoms or not,” Ferrer said. “You don’t want to be the person spreading this infection to other people.”

People who test positive should be isolated so as not to infect other people, and should be disguised when they end the isolation period and leave home. People can be tested by their healthcare provider; The coronavirus testing sites listed on the LA County websites offer tests for free.

Officials will require workers to disguise themselves indoors if not everyone in a room is vaccinated.

According to a proposal recommended by the State Council for Occupational Safety and Health Standards on Thursday, California should remove the requirements for workers’ masks in situations where everyone in a room is fully vaccinated and has no symptoms of COVID-19.

But if even an unvaccinated worker or guest enters for whom the employer has no vaccination records, then every employee in the room will have to disguise himself, according to a proposal made by the California Department of Occupational Safety and Health, known as Cal / OSHA.

The plan also proposes that by July 31, all employees indoors or at open events of 10,000 or more people should continue to physically distance themselves from others or be allowed to wear respirators – such as the N95 respirator – for voluntary use. .

Some settings, such as schools, camps and hospitals, will have stricter requirements

Officials will still have special requirements for facilities such as schools, day camps, kindergartens, hospitals, health facilities and high-risk municipalities. And masking, distancing and infection control measures will still be needed in these settings, Ferrer said.

Some companies may decide to continue to require camouflage

Some companies may require customers to wear masks, although the state and county will no longer require them.

LA County will publish a list of best practices next week to help businesses make plans.
