After passing the milestone on September 2, the landing module of the Indian space exploration mission to the Chandrayan 2 is expected to make its first orbit correction between 8.45-9.45 am IST. The Vikram and Pragian trackers, both components in the landing module, are now one step closer to achieving their long-awaited soft landing on September 7th.
From its current elliptical orbit at 1
On September 1, the Chandrayaan 2 composite (combined units of orbit, lander and rover) completed its last and fifth maneuvers to lower the orbit, bringing it to an almost circular orbit of 119 x 127 km around the moon. The earth is now orbiting the same elliptical 119 x 127 km orbit. After separation from orbit, the maneuver this morning will make one of two adjustments to the orbit at the altitude of the lander before the planned soft landing of the lander and rover on the moon's surface . This trial is scheduled for 1.55am IST on September 7th.
During the launch of the landing module to the lunar surface, ISRO will observe two deorbit (lowering orbit) maneuvers, respectively, on 3 and 4 September. This will be followed by a live broadcast from the ISRO Control Room at the Satellite Control Center (SCC) in Bengaluru, leading to the landing itself, which the ISRO chairman described as " 15 minutes of terror " for the complexity and challenge of soft landing (something that ISRO does for the first time).
In the next few days, the first landing site maps (scheduled for September 3 and 4) of Vikram land will be created to ensure that the landing site is safe, as previously thought, to make a soft landing. This is a crucial step in the mission, as ISRO mission engineers will not operate the spacecraft far from the control center.
The Orbiter will also be exploring his long-standing home for the first time, ensuring that no damage will be caused to his travel tools so far and conducting an in-depth exploration of the Vikram landing site in the South Polar Moon area.
