Large quantities of lime-bearing ticks found near the beaches

A new study has found that tick ticks, which are commonly found in wooded areas, also live near beaches in Northern California.

The study was published last Friday in the journal Applied and ecological biology found an abundance of ticks in the brush near the beaches, through which people tend to pass to reach the sand.

“We looked at the coastal bushes and we looked at redwood and oak forests and things like that, because everyone tends to look at the same places. And we found ticks almost everywhere we looked, ”said Daniel Salkeld, a Colorado scientist at State University. learningsaid on Washington Post.

The very fact that these infectious ticks are commonly thought to be associated with wooded areas underscores the uncertainty surrounding how widespread they are.

Lyme disease, a well-known tick-related disease, is the product of a black tick infestation with black legs. Although difficult to diagnose, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention we estimate that about 480,000 people are infected with Lyme disease each year.

Finding ticks in these coastal areas was particularly surprising because western gray squirrels, the usual “source of infection for ticks you do not usually inhabit these areas.

The study did not determine what animal causes infectious ticks in these coastal areas and said Salkeld environmentalists will need to do more research to determine the cause.

To avoid the best tick infestation after walking on wooded or beach paths, people should take off all the clothes they have been wearing and throw them in a hot dryer for 20 minutes to kill all possible ticks. People should then check their bodies for ticks, which are usually found on the head, back of the ears, armpits, groin and behind the knees.

“I̵

7;m not trying to spoil the rest or the weather outdoors,” said Salkeld. “… Just be aware and get rid of them as soon as possible.”
