Lone Pine Brewing Co. and Allagash Brewing Co. won two gold medals at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival in Denver this week.
Portland breweries won the best awards for “world-class beer, which accurately illustrates this style, showing the right balance of taste, aroma and appearance”, according to the criteria of the festival for beers with a gold medal.
Allagash won gold for his signature “White”, a Belgian-style wit that the brewery describes as a “shade of pale straw” with a “silky, almost pillow-like texture”.

Founded in 1982, the Great American Beer Festival is described as “the leading American beer festival and competition.” Events this year have moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic, which lasts from late September to this Saturday, October 17.
This year, breweries across the United States, from Utah to Georgia, collected 272 gold, silver and bronze medals.
In recent years, I have also seen awards for the Maine at the festival. In 2019, Lone Pine won bronze with Chaos Emeralds, an imperial IPA, and in 2018, Allagash White won another medal, bronze. There were no winners in Maine in 2017, according to the festival’s website, but in 2016, Alagash won a gold medal for the Allagash Tripel, a Belgian-style triple – a strong, golden pale ale.
