"We have recently received a small number of rider reports that have experienced a stronger than expected front wheel braking," the company said in an e-mail blog sent to customers on Sunday
. replacing about 3000 pedal bikes in New York, Washington and San Francisco with traditional bicycles to prevent disruption of service. The company already operates around 17,000 traditional bikes in these cities
The stock brands that were affected by the abolition of the service include Citi Bike in New York, Capital Bikeshare in Washington and Ford GoBike in the bay area. Some of the electric bicycles are still on docks, but customers will no longer be able to hire them.
"After a small number of reports and abundance of caution, we proactively stop our electric bikes from service," said Citi Biker Julie Wood: "Safety is always the first."
The company said it worked on a new electromobility model that will soon be ready to roll in. The operator motivated last year to take action to avoid competition from the rival Uber Technologies Inc.
