Marlins acquires Starling Marte from D-Backs with surprising move in MLB trading deadline, according to report

Now, look:
Marlins Add Starling Marte, Trade Jonathan Villar

In one of the most surprising moves of Major League Baseball’s 2020 deadline, the Miami Marlins agreed to acquire outsider Starling Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Arizona received pitchers Caleb Smith, Umberto Maggia and Julio Frias, for Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Marte, 31

, played well during his short stay in the desert. He hit .311 / .384 / .443 (123 OPS +) with two home games and five stolen bases (in seven attempts) in 33 games. He thinks it’s a big upgrade for fish that have only one healthy outside player (Matt Joyce) with OPS + higher than 100.

The Diamondbacks originally acquired Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the winter in exchange for right-wing Brennan Malone and shortlist Liover Peguero. However, the Diamondbacks did not seem interested in exercising their club option for next season, which called for him to win $ 12.5 million.

The 29-year-old Smith has not appeared in a regular season match since July 25 for undisclosed reasons. The marlins were, of course, in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak at the time. He solidified in his first two seasons in Miami as a mid-rotation hand. In 44 starts before 2020, he published 93 ERA +, while striking out 10 tests for nine innings. Smith is under the control of the team in the 2023 season and in a sense serves as a proxy for Robbie Ray. (Diamondbacks traded Ray with Toronto Blue Jays earlier on Monday.)

The 23-year-old Magia made the leap earlier this year from High-A to the big ones. In three starts, he allowed 13 goals and six runs, while throwing 10 assists. He mainly sent his fast balls from the 90s and a pair of breakable balls. Diamondbacks is likely to continue its development as a starter, although there is a real expectation that it will be a relief.

The Marlins entered Monday with a record of 14-15, a good draw for second place in the National League East with Philadelphia Phillies. According to the extended rules after the season, all teams from first and second place will make the playoffs. For the Marlins, this would be their first trip to the tournament since winning the 2003 World Series.
