Patricia, 46, was fired from the Lions shortly after Detroit’s loss to Texas on Thanksgiving. He went 13-29-1 in his three seasons as coach of the Lions. The Lions have replaced Patricia with Dan Campbell, who has spent the previous five seasons coaching the New Orleans Saints. Campbell moved 5-7 as interim coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2015.

A former Division III coach, Patricia also served as a graduate assistant in Syracuse before joining the Patriots headquarters in 2004. He served as an offensive assistant this season as the Patriots won their third Super Bowl in four years. In 2006, Patricia was promoted to linebacker coach, a position she held in the 2010 season. After spending the 2011 season as New England safety coach, Patricia was appointed as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2012. Patricia remained in that position. in the 2017 season.

During this period, the Patriots won two Super Bowls and three AFC Championships. The New England defense was in the top 10 of the NFL with the fewest points allowed each season during that period. They boasted the league’s highest-defensive defense in 2016, the same year that the Patriots won their fifth Super Bowl under coach Bill Belichik.

The Patriots are coming out of their first lost season since 2000, Belichik’s first season in New England. While the defense finished seventh in the NFL with allowed points, the Patriots’ violation ended 27th in the league in scoring points, 30th in passing and 24th in red zone efficiency. The New England offense enjoys a successful quick attack; they were fourth in the quick yards won, sixth in the quick touchdowns won, and eighth in the average carrying yards.

Quarterback is the main issue when the Patriots head out of season. Jarrett Stidham is the only Patriots quarterback currently on contract, with 2020 starter Cam Newton set to join a free agency in March.
