Michigan is the fifth best “Pizza State” in the American Food & Wine rankings

Michiganers already knew that the state had great pizza – now others recognize our Detroit style and other favorites as first-class varieties of Italian beer.

Food & Wine magazine recently published its list of “America’s Top 10 Pizza Countries.” The article even opens with an ode to Buddy’s pizza, the original and most iconic pizza in Detroit that exists.

7;s love of light, crunchy, buttery crust, perfectly caramelized cheese and salty tomato sauce, Michigan ranks 5th on its list behind No. 1 New Jersey, No. 2 Connecticut, No. 3 New York and No. 4 Illinois.

The original Detroit style was invented by Buddy founder Gus Gurera in 1946. The recipe was later refined along with the original member of the kitchen staff, Concetta “Connie” Piccinato. Baked in a square steel pan originally made by the automotive industry, Buddy’s Detroit-style pizza uses double-strained dough, real Wisconsin brick cheese, and a secret sauce recipe.

Other notable pizzerias in Detroit mentioned in the article include the Cloverleaf Bar and Restaurant, Loui’s Pizza and Michigan & Trumbull.
