Microsoft assures Skype for Business Online users that between now and retirement date, nothing will change. But come July 31, 2021, the service will no longer be available. As part of its quest to encourage people to migrate to teams, Microsoft says that "from September 1, 2019, we will be getting all new Office 365 customers directly to chat, meeting and call teams."

In a Microsoft Teams blog post that says:

In 2017, we launched Microsoft Teams as a "hub for teamwork" at Microsoft 365. Teams combine chat, video, chat and collaboration documents into one , an integrated application – and enables a whole new way of working. For the past two years, we have worked closely with clients to refine our teams, and now we feel that we are now able to confidently recommend it as an upgrade to all Skype for Business customers online. Clients who have already made the move tell us that teams have not only helped them improve collaboration overall, but also provide a rare opportunity to rethink the way work is done in their organizations. Using teams, companies around the world are becoming more agile, reducing cycle times, improving the efficiency of core workflows, and reducing unnecessary costs. Not only are teams an upgrade for Skype for Business Online, it is a powerful tool that opens the door to a whole new way of doing business.

Microsoft also shares details of feature requests it seeks to address. These include:

  • Dynamic 911 . A feature of the Microsoft Teams phone system, Dynamic E911 automatically uses the caller's current location to direct it to the PSAP operated by the local authority. The Dynamic E911 will be shipped to United States teams by the end of this calendar year.
  • Shorter detention periods . The new save period options will allow customers to limit channel and chat retention periods to 1 day and ensure that when data is deleted, it is removed from all Teams permanent storage locations. Shorter retention periods will be available in teams by the end of this calendar year. Teams and Skype Consumer Interop . Interop between Teams and Skype Consumer will allow users of both services to communicate using chat and chat. Teams and Skype Consumer Interop will be available in teams during the first quarter of calendar year 2020
  • Integration and Recording of Contact Center Compliance . At Inspire earlier this month, we announced partner teams with Five9, Genesys and NICE to enable Contact Center solutions – and with ASC, NICE and Verint to provide compliance records. We are also working with other certified Skype for Business Online partners to bring other contact and compliance solutions to the team market.
