Microsoft Project xCloud will also allow people to stream games to mobile devices.
Microsoft’s new game streaming service, Project xCloud, is now available for Android phones and tablets. It competes directly with Google Stadia, which launched last year and allows people to play computer games on Android phones, Google̵
Think of xCloud as “Netflix of Games.” MIcrosoft’s game streaming service allows you to play high-quality games that typically require a powerful Xbox game console, wherever there’s a fast enough (10Mbps or better) Internet connection without ever having to buy an Xbox. By comparison, Netflix requires half that speed or 5Mbps for HD video streaming.
The service can help attract casual gamers to Microsoft’s ecosystem, as it doesn’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on the Xbox. Game streaming is included as part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass Ultimate service for $ 14.99 per month, which offers over 150 Xbox games. Most games also require an Xbox controller paired with your phone via Bluetooth, although a few, such as Microsoft’s Minecraft Dungeons, also support touch controls.
Google Stadia is free, but you have to pay full price for games that range in price from about $ 14.99 to $ 60 or more. Premium Stadia subscribers get access to more free titles per month and 4K games if their internet connection is fast enough to support it. Microsoft’s solution is much more like Netflix than Google’s, offering a buffet of games that you don’t pay for individually but have access to as long as you pay the monthly fee.
Your experience relies entirely on how good your internet connection is. This can sometimes be a problem. At home, where I have high-speed internet, the feeling is very similar to the game directly from my console. But it won’t work if your connection is too slow – a problem that Google Stadia also has. This is one of the reasons why operators are pushing for newer 5G networks, which will one day offer fast enough data rates to be able to play games wherever you have your phone.
Some industry leaders are not yet fully selling streaming services such as Google Stadia and Microsoft xCloud. In an interview for a protocol published on Tuesday, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnik said that streaming games will not change the way we play games. Take-Two is an important player in the gaming industry. He has released hit games such as Grand Theft Auto and NBA 2K, and some of his titles are now available on Google Stadia’s rival platform.
Zelnik told Protocol that streaming services are too dependent on Wi-Fi or cellular networks, which will not always be fast enough.
“I’m talking against my own interests, aren’t I? We need to paint this picture of nirvana; but I just don’t think it’s nirvana,” he told Protocol. “Nirvana is making great hits and then people will find them. We’ve sold 135 million Grand Theft Auto Vs, 32 million Red Dead Redemptions. I wish I could tell you that there will come a time when different cloud gaming services will means that these numbers are doubled or tripled, but I don’t really see it. “
Gamers who own iPhones and iPads also can’t use Microsoft’s new service on these devices. Apple’s developer policy prevents gaming streaming services until recently. And while Apple updated its developer terms on Sept. 11 to allow this type of service, Microsoft believes they will still offer a “bad customer experience,” as Apple will require Microsoft to offer each game as a separate download.
