Experts have urged Americans not to travel to Thanksgiving family reunions this week, although millions were set to oppose the council as the United States crossed the threshold of more than 12 million coronavirus cases.
Ominous warnings came when Donald Trump seemed to admit that the coronavirus was “rampant” in the United States, unlike his statements during the election campaign that the virus would simply “disappear”
As new Covid-19 infections in the United States approached 200,000 a day, Trump tweeted Saturday night insisting that things were bad outside the United States, posting: “Fake news does not mean that” Covid “It’s raging all over the world, not just in the United States. “
On Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading infectious disease expert in the United States and a senior public health official at the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said the country was in a “very, very difficult situation at all levels” with growing drastic infections.
He followed official government advice on Friday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to Americans not to travel and gather with relatives and friends for Thanksgiving this coming Thursday.
Fauci said that more than the risk of flying alone, the more busy were the busy airports.
“You are at a crowded airport, you are tidying up, not everyone is wearing masks. That puts yourself at risk … that’s what will get us into even more trouble, “he said.
Fauci warned of “seemingly innocent meetings” indoors with family and friends.
About 50 million people are expected to travel in various ways this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, which could potentially lead to a new outbreak of infections a few weeks later and threaten the Christmas holidays, Fauci warned.
Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan says “we’re quite worried” about Americans planning to oppose the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advice and travel for Thanksgiving and gather at dangerous circumstances.
“Family reunion is the number one event,” he said, warning that people give up such events by not wearing masks properly and violating the rules of social distancing.
The United States has registered one million new cases of coronavirus per week in the past two weeks and now has 12.1 million cases and 256,000 deaths, the highest in the world, according to the Jones Hopkins Coronavirus Research Center.
Fauci added that he understands that society is tired of restrictions, staying away from others and holding back travel, but he reiterated that mitigation measures such as wearing masks, washing hands and social distancing are effective.
And restricting people in restaurants and avoiding or closing bars “could dull the curve,” he said.
As Moncef Slavey, chief scientific adviser to the government’s Warp Speed vaccine development and distribution program, said Sunday that if the first coronavirus vaccine is approved for use next month, the first Americans outside of clinical trials will be vaccinated by December 11 or 12.
And if 70% of the US population can be vaccinated by May, then approximately then Americans could return to normal and put the pandemic behind them.
Fauci urged Americans not to travel and gather and make sure they took the right measures, saying, “If you can hang out there, we can get out of this.”
With successful vaccines on his wings, he said, “Help is on the way, so you shouldn’t look at it as a hopeless situation.”
