For the past 22 years, Missy Elliott has remained anchored in the music video space – not an easy task in the volatile terrain of an ever-changing industry. Her visuals, especially those created in partnership with directors Hip Williams and Dave Myers, are emblematic. On Monday (August 26th), she will finally be honored with her vision as this year's winner of the 2019 VMA Video Vanguard Award.
And to continue the excitement until then, Missy released a new EP on Friday, appropriately titled Iconology . Her Kickoff track, Throw It Back, finds her imperial voice leading, keeping the mood as seamlessly cool as ever. This is fully featured in the new video that accompanies it, featuring Teyana Taylor, another talented visionary, as a guide to a museum dedicated to all things Missy. It is time for such a place to exist.
In the clip, Missy stands in the center, dressed in a pink suit, leading a team of dancers and seeming to command certain spells. It changes the colors of the world around it. She uses her long braids as a pocket for a group of girls. And long ago, she (rightly) wheeled around with a glass of brown liqueur in her hand.
As this is Missy Elliott's enterprise, there are enough costumes and tuned changes to keep you on your toes and give you an endless array of moods. It's tempting to call it all ̵
Missy shared her cheerful mood on the eve of the release of her new Iconology EP on Twitter : "Let #ThrowItBack be by the time the music just feels good and makes us want to dance! "At the end of the Throw It Back video, she literally dances on the moon with a banner bearing the familiar logo, though one she has made entirely her own – an open nod to her upcoming MMA trophy acceptance.
Watch how all the wonderful craziness goes down in the "Throw It Back" video above and tune into the 2019 VMA live from The Prudential Center on Monday, August 26 at 8:00 pm ET / PT to see the explosive rendition of Missy Video Vanguard!
