Washington – Finance Minister Stephen Mnuchin met with Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday afternoon to present a proposal to alleviate the Trump administration’s coronavirus, according to a Democratic aide, after Democrats unveiled their revised package earlier this week. of $ 2.2 trillion.
Mnuchin and Pelosi met for about an hour and a half, and then Mnuchin went to the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“Today we had an extensive conversation with Secretary Mnuchin and identified areas where we are looking for further clarification. Our talks will continue,”
The House passed a $ 3.4 trillion bill in May, called the HEROES Act, but Republicans refused to consider the bill in the Senate. Senate Democrats blocked a $ 500 billion Republican proposal, arguing it was inadequate.
Democrats in parliament on Monday unveiled a revised version of the HEROES Act, which will cost about $ 2.2 trillion. The updated HEROES Act would tooof American families and $ 600 a week in benefits in addition to unemployment insurance. The bill provides $ 225 billion for education and $ 436 billion in federal aid to state and local governments.
McConnell said on Wednesday that the Democrats’ $ 2 trillion proposal was “too high” and “unusual”, indicating that he would not support the legislation either.
After meeting with McConnell, Mnuchin told reporters that the negotiators had “made great progress in many areas”.
“We have work to do and we will see where we get to,” Mnuchin said. “We’ll go back and do some more work.”
Mnuchin said in an interview with CNBC earlier Wednesday that he “hopes” a deal will be reached.
“I say we will try to make another serious attempt to do that, and I think we hope we can do something,” Mnuchin said.
Mnuchin said his proposal would resemble the framework that the two-party house problem solves.which cost about $ 2 trillion. Pelosi and several heads of Parliament’s committees rejected the plan, arguing that “it does not meet what is needed to save lives and stimulate the economy”. The “Solving Problem” proposal includes another round of direct payments to Americans of $ 1,200, $ 450 benefits in addition to unemployment insurance and more funding for the Wage Protection Program.
In the summer, Mnuchin and Pelosi took part in unsuccessful negotiations on a COVID-19 relief bill. Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said they wereby $ 1 trillion if Republicans raise theirs by $ 1 trillion, which means they will support legislation that will cost about $ 2 trillion. It is unclear whether House Democrats would like to consider Mnuchin’s proposal, which costs less than $ 2 trillion.
Pelosi and Mnuchin resumed talks on a coronavirus proposal earlier this week.
Some House Republicans are also ranked by what they consider to be secret deals to draft any legislation.
“Classic swamp … I hear from K Street about a ‘deal’ between Mnuchin and Pelosi. Just like you learned how bills become law, huh? It’s not ‘draining the swamp’, it’s the swamp … and hopefully that @realDonaldTrump will abstain from Mnuchin, “tweeted GOP congressman Chip Roy on Wednesday morning.
If Pelosi and Mnuchin still agree, the bill will have to be passed by the House by the end of the week, as members of Congress will return to their districts to campaign by the end of October. It is unclear whether such legislation will be approved in the Republican-controlled Senate.
