The combined jackpots for Mega Millions and Powerball jumped to over $ 1 billion on Saturday after a draw on Friday night for Mega Millions did not lead to a winner in the grand prize.
Powerball’s pot was $ 470 million, while Mega Millions climbed to a whopping $ 600 million.
May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri lottery, said in a statement Friday that several years have passed since both games offered such big prizes.
“We want our players to have fun, especially when there are two big mobile jackpots to start the new year,” Mega Millions CEO Gordon Medenica said in a press release, urging those who buy a ticket to take precautions.
“Although we always encourage responsible gaming, it is even more important in these experienced times to wear a mask and maintain social distance when buying your tickets,”
This is the fourth time in Mega Millions’ history that the pot has reached $ 600 million. It increased after no ticket matched all six numbers – 3, 6, 16, 18 and 58, plus the golden Mega Ball 11 – after the draw on Friday night.
Five tickets corresponded to the five numbers of white balls for the second prize. They were sold in New York, California, New Jersey, Georgia and Massachusetts.
The next draw of Mega Millions is Tuesday. If there is a winner with the biggest prize, the cash option will be $ 442.4 million.
There has been no jackpot winner since September 2020, when a ticket to Wisconsin won the $ 120 million prize.
The next Powerball draw is Saturday night. The $ 470 million pot is the 10th largest in history. The winner of the grand prize can take home $ 362.7 million with the cash option.
The last Powerball jackpot ticket was also won in September 2020, when a ticket worth more than $ 94 million was sold in New York.
The chances of winning are one in over 300 million, but that doesn’t stop many people from dreaming of big ones.
