MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Telegram became the second most downloaded application in the United States after President Donald Trump was removed from Twitter and Facebook, reports The Telegraph.
Some 545,000 people in the United States downloaded Telegram between Wednesday and Sunday, almost three times more than the same period a week earlier, the newspaper reported Monday, citing data company Sensor Tower after the social network Parler was shut down offline .
CEO John Matze said Monday that Parler is likely to stay offline longer than expected after bans on Big Tech prompted other vendors to abandon the service, which is popular with Trump supporters.
Earlier, Google, Apple and Amazon suspended their social networking services after accusing it of not acting on publications related to Capitol Hill violence.

On Saturday, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was quoted as saying by The Telegraph that the three companies “create a much bigger problem for freedoms than Twitter”. Durov said Telegram is working to continue working on the iPhone, even if Apple removes Telegram from the App Store.
Jen Goldback, a professor of information research at the University of Maryland, told The Telegraph that the Telegram could become a “longer-term home” for Trump supporters than Parler because it was less likely to be taken offline.
On January 6, a group of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building, clashed with police, damaged property, seized the opening stage and occupied the rotunda. The unrest came after Trump called on his supporters to protest alleged voter fraud during the last election. Since then, the outgoing president has been blocked on all major social networks, at least until he is out of office.
