Myth: You have to clean inside your vagina with special products.
Take a stroll along the women's hygiene trail at your local pharmacy and you should find a great selection of products that say your genitals smell fresh and clean.
C In fact, these products are not useful for the vagina and vulva, and gynecologists, including Gunther, warn against using them.
"Your vagina doesn't need to smell like a garden," gynecologist Dr. Donnitsa Moore told Insider before.
The odorous vaginal secret is what allows it to be cleaned naturally, according to the Mayo Clinic, so normally healthy people do not need to buy special cleaning products there.
A popular vaginal cleansing product is a soul that acts by discharging a liquid, such as water or a mixture of vinegar-water, into the vagina. Often these products contain added flavors, which Moore said are problematic.
Fragrances can potentially irritate the vagina and cause inflammation, itching and pain. Plus, if a person already has a yeast infection or other bacterial vaginal infection and tries to flush the area with a shower, it can actually push the bacteria up into the cervix and worsen the infection, according to Moore.
Even the scent of free showers and other vaginal cleansing products can upset the healthy bacteria of the vagina, Gunter writes and cause infections.
