It was not planned as a historic mission, but it would be a moment of something: the first exit for the whole woman.
But this moment will have to wait, NASA said on Monday for some basic question – suit sizes.
The two astronauts who had to walk together in space on Friday, Ann S. McClane and Christina H. Koch had to wear an average torso size. But only one is easily accessible to the International Space Station.
The mission itself is unchanged. On Friday, two astronauts will be out of the space station on a six-hour mission to install massive lithium-ion batteries to help feed the research lab. Ms. Koch is still scheduled to participate with her colleague astronaut Nick Heig; Ms. McKlain made her first walk in space last week.
NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Shirholtz said in an interview Monday, that there are two medium-sized solid upper torso – "essentially the suit's shirt", according to NASA – the space station.
But there were a few questions. One was that McKlain believed she could work in a large-sized torso, but at the end of her space trip last Friday she wore a medium-sized torso and learned that it was better. Ms. Koch also uses the same size.
And one of the two medium sized torres that are available is not yet properly configured for a walk in space. It will take hours of crew work – not to mention extra risk – to fix it in time for Friday. Instead of doing so, NASA has decided to simply exclude astronauts. Robert Markowitz / NASA
After all, both women have made an exit in space – just not together. 19659002] "When you can simply switch people, mission becomes more important than a cold-blooded stage," said Ms Schierholz.
