Report on the chemistry of Venus was recently published in Natural astronomy. NASA did not participate in the study and cannot comment directly on the findings; however, we trust the scientific peer review process and look forward to the active discussion that will follow its publication.

NASA has an extensive astrobiology program that seeks life in many different ways inside and outside the solar system. Over the last two decades, we have made new discoveries that collectively suggest a significant increase in the likelihood of finding life elsewhere.

As with the growing number of planetary bodies, Venus is proving to be an exciting place to discover, although it has not been a significant part of the search for life due to its extreme temperatures, atmospheric composition and other factors. Two of the next four candidate missions for NASA’s Discovery Program are focused on Venus, as is the European mission EnVision, in which NASA is a partner. Venus is also a planetary destination that we can reach with smaller missions.

Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, and scattering of life in the universe.
