NASA releases magnificent new images on the Milky Way

These 20th anniversary images of Chandra show groups of galaxies, the center of the Milky Way, and some exotic star-forming areas.

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory marks 20 years since the space shuttle Columbia launched it into space on July 23, 1999. The agency published a series of magnificent new images of Chandra to celebrate. X-ray emission, making it ideal for observing hot things like stars and galactic clusters. The unique vision of the telescope generates colorful images that highlight the turbulent processes occurring in the stars. Researchers often combine Chandra's view with that of other telescopes, including Hubble. -opener.

NASA released a composite image of a massive star Cygnus OB2 that combines Chandra's observations with data from two other telescopes. This bright, wild view shows how this star sends high-energy winds. "These strong winds can collide or cause shocks in the gas and dust around the stars to deposit large amounts of X-ray energy that Chandra can detect," NASA said.

For 20 years, Chandra has taken 2700 trips around the Earth and has gone more than 1.5 billion miles (2.4 billion kilometers).
