The seventh flight of the NASA helicopter “Ingenuity” on Mars see fly on the vehicle nearly 350 feet to a landing site that had not been carefully surveyed before.
The ingenuity continues to impress. This demonstration mission, which began on April 3, was supposed to last only 30 days, but NASA seems to want to get such a long run from this little plane like possible. And it’s hard to blame them. Ingenuity, despite a crazy sixth flight, performed extremely well, demonstrating the potential for more ambitious and sophisticated Martian aircraft.
This last hop was the first for Ingenuity since he survived in-flight anomaly during its sixth flight on May 22, 2021. During this flight, the helicopter’s navigation system was activated due to a single lost frame, which led to some disturbing fragmentary movements. The ingenuity managed to survive in the extra time and energy required to complete the flight, and he landed without further incident.
Fortunately, nothing seems to have gone wrong during the seventh campaign. It was “another successful flight”, declared NASA JPL on Twit “No anomalies in flight 7, ingenuity is healthy!” stated unspecified team member. No exact date has been given for the seventh flight, except for NASA saying this will happen no earlier than this past Sunday, June 6. The space agency published a single black-and-white photo taken by Ingenuity during the flight.
The seventh leap of ingenuity was a little over a minute long, during which time the 4-kilogram (1.8-kilogram) helicopter traveled 106 meters. He flew southlanding in a complete stranger place. The new airport was selected based on satellite data provided by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s NASA Intelligence Orbiter, which showed it was flat and unobstructed.
There is still no talk of an eighth flight, but we have no reason to believe that this will not happen. And in fact, ingenuity seems no worse for wear and tear. On Twitter, NASA JPL quoted A team member says: “There are still no signs of aging in the drive system. With each flight we receive additional information in the real world about the performance of the rotor and its thermal characteristics, which allows us to gradually increase the allowable flight times. “So that’s pretty encouraging. NASA’s Perseverance rover recently surpassed 100 solos, or Martian days, on Mars. He explored the first five fields of ingenuity, but NASA now needs less spectacle and more research than the rover. To date, Perseverance has tested all of its cameras and instruments and transmitted over 75,000 images in addition to recording the sounds of Mars and generating oxygen from the atmosphere.
From here, Perseverance, along with its reliable helper, will move south to the next target area of study.
