Nearly 2,000 doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine were damaged at a facility in the Boston, VA area after a cleaning contractor accidentally loosened a freezer plug, according to a report.
The footage was discovered by VA Boston pharmacy staff on Tuesday. At least 1,900 doses have been compromised, Kyle Toto, a spokesman for VA Boston’s health system, told the Boston Globe.
“The plug was found loose after a contractor accidentally pulled it out during the cleaning,” Toto said.
He added that he did not think the spoiled doses would affect the spread of the vaccine, and told the newspaper that replacement doses were already being delivered.
Toto said he wasn’t sure why the alarm hadn’t gone off.
“An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the incident and why the surveillance and alarm system did not work as expected,” he said.
Massachusetts has registered a total of 462,910 coronavirus cases and 13,622 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began last year, according to the state Department of Public Health.
