Rumors about the next model of Apple’s favorite compact smartphone are already in full force, although it may be well over a year before we see it.
Analyst Ross Young published in Twitter on April 1 – a grain of salt, etc. – that the next iPhone SE will arrive in 2022 with the same 4.7-inch form factor as the current SE. This refreshed model, Young writes, may come equipped with sub-6GHz 5G variation instead of support for all bands including ultra fast millimeter wave spectrum. Young also mentioned listening to a 6.1-inch model with a “hole rather than a slot” that could be released in 2023.
Part of that was enjoyed by a previous report by trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last month. Referring to a report from the Kuo supply chain, 9 to 5Mac announced that Kuo also expects 5G connectivity to arrive in the 2022 model of the iPhone SE. Kuo also said he expects the 2022 model to have a 4.7-inch design, but with an improved processor.
The most interesting of these rumors is that Apple may plan to remove the SE form factor for a larger display. It is not clear whether the SE will have a sports body of the same size with thinner frames or Apple will size the SE (the latter would be bad news for the little ones among us).
Given that at first glance we are more than a year away from receiving a newer iPhone SE – for reports whose new version is scheduled for 2022 – there is still enough time for rumors about SE to generate noise around more new, more powerful device. But it looks interesting.
