NIO reveals an impressive autonomous electric car with a massive battery



NIO today introduced an impressive new electric car, the NIO ET7, with a massive battery and the potential to be fully autonomous.

Often referred to as “Tesla of China”, the electric vehicle company has been successful in selling some electric SUVs in the growing Chinese market.

At NIO Day 2020 in Chengdu today, NIO unveiled its next electric vehicle: the NIO ET7.

This is an electric sedan with a very impressive drive.

NIO describes the electric drive of ET7:

“The ET7 inherited NIO’s highly efficient DNA with a 180 kW permanent magnet motor at the front and a 300 kW asynchronous motor at the rear. This figure of 1000 km (621 miles) is based on the NEDC cycle, which is known to be rarely representative of real driving.

However, with 150 kWh of energy capacity and an efficient-looking design, the ET7 is likely to get over 500 miles of range on a single charge.

Excluding the drivetrain, the ET7 is also impressive with its extensive autonomous driving hardware.

NIO says that the electric sedan is equipped with 33 sensors and 4 Nvidia Orin chips:

“NIO has built the full NAD capability for autonomous management, including perception, localization algorithms, management strategy and platform software. NIO Aquila Super Sensing has 33 high-performance sensor units, including 11 8MP high-resolution cameras, 1 LiDAR high-resolution high-resolution, 5 mm wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 2 high-precision positioning devices, V2X and ADMS . The ET7 has a starting price of 448,000 RMB (~ $ 69,000) before the EV incentives, and will also be available under NIO’s Battery-as-aa-service (BaaS) model, which is available at a lower price and monthly price for battery.

In addition, the NIO takes a Tesla-like approach to autonomous driving capabilities.

It will provide safety features activated by their autonomous driving technology as standard features, but will charge autonomous driving features that will be offered as a subscription.

Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022.
