Nordstrom opened a new store in Manhattan on Thursday – without any goods.

Instead, the store offers tailoring services and allows customers to pick up or return items, including online orders from any retailer.

The incentive to open these local hubs comes as Nordstrom, like many department stores, is trying to reinvent itself by seeing customers shop more online.

"We believe this is our model for the future," said Eric Nordstrom, co-chair of the retailer. "So we have to figure it out and fix it. The more we engage our customers, the better. ”

The Upper East Side location is the first Nordstrom mini-store in New York. The company opens three more in Los Angeles and plans another one in New York's West Village later this month. The company's co-president declined to say how much Nordstrom would open overall.

Last month, the trader discontinued its revenue and sales forecasts for the current fiscal year after reporting a decline in second quarter earnings and sales. Sales at his full-price stores dropped 6.5%.

At Nordstrom Mini Stores, which average about 2,000 square feet, customers can get furnishings and alterations from tailors in the room, even if they buy their clothes elsewhere. Stores will also accept not only returns of items purchased from Nordstrom, but also from any online retailer. Customers carry packaged items, with or without pre-printed labels, and the seller will ship them. There is no service charge.

Each local store is tailored to the neighborhood in which it is located. Los Angeles stores, for example, offer manicures, while the Upper East Side store in Manhattan has an area where parents can drop their strollers to be cleaned.

Nordstrom told the Associated Press that the local strategy focuses on gaining share in the company's most important markets by making its customers more engaged through the services it offers. The merchant said his business is focused on the best markets, with the top 10 accounting for 60% of his total sales.

So far, Nordstrom has been successful with its local Los Angeles stores. Customers spend an average of two and a half more. In addition, product returns come eight days faster than usual, giving Nordstrom a better chance of reselling them.
