If you purchase the PS5 versions of Hitman 3 or No Man’s Sky in the coming months, you will not have access to PSVR support for any of the games included in their PS4 versions, as the company has not announced PSVR games on the PS5.
As for Hitman 3, a Sony spokesman told UploadVR by email that you would need the PS4 version of Hitman 3 to play it in VR, as the PSVR works as a backward compatible device. The spokesman then clarified: “We have not announced PS5 titles for PS VR.”
There are no new PSVR games on the PS5
This follows months of speculation about how the PS5 may adopt the PSVR when it launches in mid-November. We always knew that the new console would support headphones for backward compatible PS4 titles. But many hoped that the new PS5 games could integrate VR, taking advantage of the console̵
But those hopes quickly faded. For starters, Sony confirmed PS4-era controllers such as DualShock 4 and the Aim controller could not support PS5 games, which called into question how PS5’s potential VR games would track controllers. Then, when Hitman 3 announced full PSVR support earlier this year, developer IO Interactive said it was “working to finalize the specifics of how PS VR owners can enjoy Hitman in VR.” At this time, neither the studio nor Sony will confirm whether this means that the PS5 version will not support PSVR.
Finally, earlier this week, Hello Games announced the next-generation native version of No Man’s Sky’s PS5, adding that PSVR support for PlayStation is “backwards compatible.” To date, this has been the most direct confirmation we have of.
What does this mean for now
So if you’re getting a PS5 in the next few weeks and you’re excited to try out the PSVR on the console, you’ll want to make sure that buy PS4 versions of PSVR-supported games if you want to try them on the headphones. If you purchase PS5 versions, you will not find the listed PSVR support.
Fortunately, both Hitman 3 and No Man’s Sky have free upgrade plans; anyone with No Man’s Sky will be able to switch to next-generation consoles for free and also take their recording data. You need to buy Hitman 3 on PS4 digitally to qualify for a free upgrade to PS5, and in the meantime – you can’t upgrade from the physical edition. However, this does not guarantee the opposite. In other words,
Intergenerational storage functions Must means you can install both versions of the PS5 game, access the PS4 version when you want VR, and the PS5 version when you want to play on a flat screen, and then share your progress between the two, but we we have not tried this for ourselves. What is unclear, however, is whether IO Interactive and Hello Games can offer free PS4 discounts for anyone who wants to play on PSVR. According to PlayStation, this is a solution for developers.
Remember that you will also need the official PSVR camera adapter to use the PS5 headphones as well. You can’t use Sony’s new PS5 camera, you have to use a PS4 era camera. However, Sony sends the adapter free of charge to PSVR owners.
What does this mean for the future?
This news comes shortly after Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan commented on the future of VR to The Washington Post. “The PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR, and we definitely believe that at some point in the future, VR will be a significant component of interactive entertainment, ”said Ryan. “Will it be this year?” No. Will it be next year? No. But will it come at some stage? We believe in that. “
These comments look as if we won’t see a real PSVR 2 that supports PS5 games directly until 2022 at the earliest. But there is something to offer other headphones will happens; from research and development to research videos and job postings, etc. Until then, however, it seems that PSVR owners will have to deal with the old PS4 games, although there should still be new VR versions of this console at least in 2021.
