No one behind the wheel in the Tesla crash that killed two

Officials say no one was in the driver’s seat when Tesla crashed into a tree in the Woodlands, Texas, late Saturday, blazing and killing both men. Authorities said the men’s wives told investigators that minutes before the crash, the two had discussed using the vehicle’s autopilot feature before driving. Physical evidence shows that one man was in the passenger seat and the other was in the back seat, officials said, although neither could be identified positively due to the duration of the fire. “It took four hours to put out the fire, which usually took minutes,”

; said Harris County Police Officer Mark Herman. Regulators have expressed concern about the type of batteries used in Tesla, warning that they could potentially make car fires more difficult to put out. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it is investigating nearly two dozen crashes involving Tesla, potentially using autopilot.
