Many of you have recently been surprised to learn about toxic fats, which are more harmful than cholesterol. Newly published study in the journal Circulation tried to deepen the understanding that scientists gained from a study in 2015. In this previous study, the research team found that increased amounts of sodium in the blood affect how certain types of white blood cells prepare to react when they sense an unhealthy cell. So for the new study, the Geisberger team examined “the metabolism of immune cells that have been exposed to high concentrations of salt,” the statement said. This time, they learned more about how salt affects the immune system: “It disrupts the respiratory chain, causing cells to produce less ATP and consume less oxygen,” explains Geisberger.
ATP or adenosine triphosphate is defined in the release as “the universal fuel that feeds all cells”, providing energy for muscle strength and metabolic regulation – which means that if high levels of sodium in the body cause a lack of ATP, it affects how these white blood cells mature … and in turn how effectively these white blood cells, which are largely responsible for the body’s immune response, are in able to function.
So how much salt is safe to eat each day? According to this study: “Nutritionists recommend that adults limit their daily intake to a maximum of five or six grams. The calculation includes salt, which is hidden in processed foods.”
