One of the most important things Bill Gates learned from Warren Buffett

To celebrate Warren Buffett’s 90th birthday on Sunday, Bill Gates wrote a blog post in honor of the couple’s 29-year friendship – and what are perhaps the most important guidelines Buffett has ever given him.

Gates and Buffett first met in 1991 and linked their shared love of math and numbers, Gates said in a post.

Since then, Gates and Buffett have played countless bridge games, eaten at McDonald’s, and exchanged advice — Gates even has an Oracle of Omaha speed dial phone in his office.

Although Gates received a lot of advice from Buffett and learned many valuable lessons, “the most important thing may be what friendship is all about,”

; Gates wrote in his post.

Gates recalled how Buffett himself put it when the couple spoke with students at Columbia University in 2017:

“You will move in the direction of the people you interact with. That’s why it’s important to communicate with people who are better than you. The friends you have will shape you as you go through life. Make a few good friends, keep them for the rest of your life, but let them be people you admire as well as like, ”Gates recalled, telling Buffett.

Buffett told the students that choosing the right friends is important for career success, and Gates agrees.

A person I admire as well as like“It’s the perfect description of how I feel about Warren,” Gates wrote in his post.

In the past, Gates said he admired how “emotionally” Buffett was “invested” in his friendships, just as he was in his business. “It’s the kind of friend you’d like to have yourself,” Gates wrote in a blog post in 2016.

“Although he maintains a busy schedule, Warren still finds time to maintain friendships like few other people I know,” Gates wrote. “He picks up the phone and calls to say hello. He regularly sends read articles that he thinks Melinda or I will find interesting.”

“Everyone should have a friend as thoughtful and kind as Warren Buffett.”
