The royal courtiers at the palace are probably annoyed by Sunday’s Oprah with Megan and Harry: A CBS special show. They like to control the image of the family, and Megan and Harry are already substitute cards. Here’s everything you need to know about the interview.
When is Oprah’s interview with Harry and Megan?
The special film about Oprah, Megan and Harry will air on CBS on Sunday, March 7 at 20:00 PT / ET and 19:00 CT. See below how to watch it if you don’t have a cable.
The 90-minute interview will begin with a chat between Oprah and Megan, as the host of the veteran talk show makes the pregnant duchess open to marriage, motherhood and the unique pressures of royal life. Prince Harry will join later and the two are expected to discuss their relocation to the United States and their future plans. You just know that baby Archie will make some kind of thing, because if Oprah knows something, it’s how to make a good TV, and royal babies are really good TVs.
CBS has released three preview videos.
How did we get here?
A normal protocol for someone as high in the royal family as Harry would be to live forever in the UK as a working member of the royal family – attending hospital openings, museum exhibits, board meetings, playing bingo with retirees and generally simply supports Queen Elizabeth II in a quiet but respectful way. But that would never be the preferred path for the rebellious Harry and his American-born wife, an actress. In fact, with his father Charles, his brother William, and the three children of William and Kate, all on the same line to the throne before him, Harry would never rule. So he and his wife, perhaps inspired by the late Diana’s love for America, decided to go their own way, in the style of Fleetwood Mac.
You may have heard that Megan and Harry (their royal titles are too complicated to continue to use here) moved first to Canada and then to California in 2020. In February 2021, after an annual trial Buckingham Palace announced that the couple will not return, as working members of the royal family, through which they will remain “much loved.”
And Megan and Harry are busy. In 2020, they signed a deal to develop Netflix programs and also signed a deal with Spotify to produce and host their own podcasts. They live in America now, and Americans will America. So the interview for Oprah, while not something an ordinary king would do, fits exactly into what a Hollywood celebrity would do.
Why not Oprah? Although Winfrey stopped making her iconic talk show in 2011, she is still one of the most powerful, well-known women in the American media, and perhaps in the world. Harry is used to powerful women, of course – just look at his mother and grandmother. And Oprah has been a part of the royal couple’s life for some time. She attended their royal wedding in 2018 and lives not far from their home in Montesito, California. In fact, Oprah gave baby Archie the sweet book, Duck! Rabbit! That he was seen reading with Megan in a video released in honor of his first birthday in May 2020.
Will there be bombs?
Lifetime lifers can be forgiven for being crazy. In 1995, Harry’s mother, Diana, sat in on a television interview with British journalist Martin Bashir. She ate quite well — discussing her bulimia, the lack of support she felt she received from royalty, and Prince Charles’ infidelity to Camilla Parker-Bowles, now his wife.
The jokes about the interview show that it will really shake the royalty. In a preview video, Winfrey reports, “You said a lot of shocking things here,” and later raises his hands and says, “Wait, hold on, wait, wait a minute.” She also stressed that nothing was forbidden for the discussion.
And in a video released Wednesday, Oprah asks Megan how she feels about the palace “to hear you’re telling the truth today.”
Megan replies that she doesn’t know how the couple can be expected to remain silent, “if there is an active role that the Company plays to perpetuate the lies about us and if it involves a risk of losing things … there is a lot already lost . ”
Yes, she did say “The Company,” one of the more slang terms for the royal family. But even if we put that aside, the old guard at Buckingham and Windsor probably invades every single word in that sentence. She seems to be proposing a campaign of lies about the couple coming straight from the palace itself.
Lighter rates may be discussed. Megan is expecting the couple’s second baby in 2021, so she may share information about it. Name preferences will almost certainly not be revealed, and it seems unlikely that Megan will spill over whether she has a girl or a boy. But it is possible that Oprah has come up with a hint about how much longer the couple has to wait for the new little one.
Maybe the couple will share some more information about their upcoming business ventures in the worlds of Netflix and Spotify. This would be standard for a celebrity interview, but it’s still weird to hear royalty – even removed royalty – discussing making money from entertainment.
Royal observers will take into account all the little home details – the views of the Sussex mansion in California, the short jingle and giggle of Archie, the couple’s dog shows – the things People magazine covers for movie stars. And whatever happens, this is new territory for the queen’s grandson. The royal family has always lived in front of the cameras, but usually in a guarded way. Oprah is nothing if it is not unguarded.
