Orange County will give COVID-19 to people aged 65 and over

Orange County officials said residents aged 65 and over were now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, noting a significant increase in access to the vaccine in the county.

The decision followed new guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday and came before the state’s official recommendation.

“My goal is to reduce hospitalizations and deaths as quickly as possible, and we must prioritize the distribution of vaccines to protect the most vulnerable in our community,”

; Dr. Clayton Chow said in a statement.

At an emergency meeting Tuesday night, the state vaccine advisory committee considered whether to adopt the CDC’s updated guidelines, which also give priority to people with basic health conditions.

Development is the latest sign of increased vaccine availability. On Thursday, California instructed counties to open the first phase of eligibility for vaccines to a wider range of healthcare workers, including public health workers, primary care clinics, specialty clinics, lab staff, dental clinics and pharmacy staff.

On Tuesday, the county advised residents not to visit the newly opened Disneyland vaccine site without reservation.

“The three existing PODs in the county [point of distribution] the sites were overwhelmed by people without reservation today, effectively closing vaccination sites. It is extremely important that people understand that meeting slots are available based on the availability of a vaccine. Appearing unconditionally emphasizes the system and exhausts the scarce resources, “the health agency said in a statement.
