Outcome of Florida v. Georgia, Withdrawal: No. 8 Daughes Cell No. 6

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – No. 8 Georgia heads No. 6 Florida 24-17 Saturday afternoon at TIAA Bank Field to take control of SEC East and keep the hopes alive in the race to become the College Playoff. Up 24-17 late in the fourth quarter, Bulldogs Jake Fromm stood tall in the face of a blitz and found narrow end Eli Wolf at third and 7 across the field to gain 22 yards to Florida's 43-yard line

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask hit Freddie Swain for a 2-yard interception with 3:11 left to reduce his team deficit to one score. Although giving the Gators a chance and momentum, the 1

7-game, 75-yard drive took 6:50 from the clock and put the Dawgs in position to get just one first down, put the game in bed.

Fromm found wide receiver freshman Dominic Blalock on a 3-yard touchdown strike with 4:43 to play in the second quarter for the first touchdown of the game to direct himself in the locker room with momentum. The Bulldogs got out and ran 64 yards on nine plays on their first drive of the third quarter. Rodrigo Blankenship kicked a 27-yard field goal to take the lead to 13 points.

Georgia is converting 12 of its 18 third-down chances to own the tenure and keep Florida's defense on the field for a whopping 67 games. Fromm went 20-of-30 for 279 yards and two touchdowns in the afternoon, while Trask was equally effective, throwing 21 of 33 for 257 yards and two scores.

What did we learn on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville? Let's look at how the CFP and SEC picture changed after the Florida-Georgia game.

1. Outside the Cell, in the CFP Discussion: Georgia senior Lawrence Lawrence Kager severed his shoulder at the loss from South Carolina earlier this month but returned to action Saturday afternoon. His presence was obvious. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound transfer from Miami had seven catches for 132 yards and two receiving points for conversion. Not only was he an X-factor on Saturday against the Gators, he was an X-factor moving forward for a Georgia team that established itself as a College Football Playoff contender.

Fromm has a receiver each in each of the last two seasons. That was Javon Wims (45 catches for 720 yards) in 2017, when the Bulldogs played for the national title, and last year was Riley Ridley (44 catches for 570 yards). Cager was apparently Fromm's man at the victory over Notre Dame in late September when he caught five passes for 82 yards and a stellar touch on the back shoulder. That's all Georgia has to pose as a real threat to the title. The offensive line showed up and the running back hull is as deep and flexible as any in the sport. If there is a threat down, the whole crime is opened. Georgia welcomed Cager back into the lineup on Saturday, and the college football playoffs welcomed Georgia back into contention as a result.

2. Road Plow: Georgia's offensive line is full of potential first-round picks, but wasn't played as well as a number expected to come in the offseason. That changed on Saturday against the very talented front seven who returned solid stars Jonathan Greenard and Jabari Zuniga. The guitars did not fire Fromm once, and the younger ones gave away a very talented secondary in Florida as a result of the time given to him. Cager was wide open on a 53-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter, taking the lead to 24-10 and putting Florida in despair. Not only Fromm benefits. It was a running game. D & Andre Swift and the rest of the running backs took some time, but the consistent third-down conversion allowed the Bulldogs offensive front to push the Gators around later in the game. Swift ran for 44 yards on the final drive of the first half to set Blankenship's field goal and set the tone for the rest of the game.

3. Tale of third downs: Florida went only 2 to 9 in the third down, and both of those third downs were in that last 17-game, 75-yard, 6:50 drive. when the Georgia defense was completely happy to keep things in front of them and let the Gators drain the clock. Florida's average distance to win a third down was 10.9 yards, which speaks volumes to Florida's biggest problem Saturday – managing football. Lamical Perine had just 31 yards on seven carries with only 9 yards long. He won 19 of those in the final drive. The lack of a steady, fast-paced attack has plagued Florida throughout the season, putting pressure on Trask to win his hand even though he did not start play after his sophomore year in high school.

Georgia, on the other hand, is hosting a defense coordinator of what is known as the "Third and Grantham" in honor of Florida Defense Coordinator Todd Grantham for his affinity for taking down the house every third and made up for it. Fromm passed 10th out of 13 passing for 119 yards on third downs, and eight of those completions moved the sticks. UGA overall was 12 of 18 on third down.

4. Technically, the SEC East is not yet over: Georgia controls the division and therefore controls its fate in the pursuit of the CFP port. But there is Missouri at home, a road game against Rudney for two weeks and a home game against Texas A&M the week after. It is not beyond the scope of the Bulldogs to lose two of them. Auburn will be the biggest challenge of the three due to its relentless front seven and the fact that it is on track. If the Bulldogs lose that deafness, the bruises can hold on to a Texas A&M team that has talent but lacks results.

Even if that happens, Florida will have to defeat Vanderbilt and Missouri to claim the split. Extraordinary circumstances will be required to avoid reaching Georgia for the third consecutive season. However, how many people saw South Carolina upset Georgia? How many people have seen Illinois beat Wisconsin? How many people were upset by the Kansas disorder in Oklahoma?
