Passengers spend 14 hours in a cold, ground plane

(Newser)

The route from Newark to Hong Kong is one of the longest flights in the world. And for United Airlines passengers on Saturday was much longer than usual – and they ended up back in Newark at the end of it. The passengers were stranded on the ground in cold weather at a Canadian military base for more than 14 hours after the flight had to be redirected to Gulf Bay, Newfoundland, for emergency medical help, CNN reported. "After the medical specialists helped the passenger, we were told we were simply reloading and then going back to Newark," said passenger Stephen Lau to NBC. "But there was a problem with one of the emergency doors being closed. At midnight ̵

1; nine hours after Newark took off and three hours after landing in Gus Bay – the passengers were informed that the door was closed and another plane would be sent to bring them back to Newark.

As temperatures dropped to -20 out, passengers were not allowed to leave the plane because customs officers were not detained overnight. Fighter Soniai Dath tells the CBC that the crew distributed blankets because the cold is "inconvenient" on the plane. As the food ran out, passengers called for help on Twitter, saying that people "do not do well". Canadian officials brought coffee and food from Tim Horton Sunday morning, and passengers were allowed to stretch their legs in the terminal building. The United had sent a plane with food to bring the passengers back to Newark, where they arrived on Sunday evening. The airline says it is doing everything possible to help passengers, although Lau says some have decided to lift their trips to Hong Kong. (After six hours of adherence to the track, these Air Transat passengers called 911 to pray for water.)
