Proposed change to the rule that NFL owners can vote on for approval during their (virtual) league meeting on May 28 caught the attention of Kensas City Shootters defender Patrick Mohames,,
Asked about the proposed alternative change to fishing rules on Friday, head coach Andy Reed said he could see how changing the rules could make the game more exciting – but he is also an old man.
“I don’t know if it will pass or not,” he told reporters. “I know that the coaches of the special teams are not very big in this. This takes away ̵
“[Keeping] the integrity of the game … you like that part of it, ”Reed continued. “On the other hand, if that happens, we have a person who can do the fourth and the 15th; he gave us the opportunity to do so. So I have some mixed thoughts about that. As an old man, I would probably stick to the integrity of the game as it is now, but I could also see where the other part can be exciting. “
Throughout the league, most will remember Mahomes’ fourth and ninth passes to Hill Tirek against the Baltimore Ravens in 2018, which kept the game of tying the game alive – or rather (and more famously). 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp play-call on third and -15 in the Super Bowl LIV, which caused the return of the Chiefs from a 20-10 deficit in the fourth quarter to a 31-20 victory.
But as Ethan Douglas noted in late December, success in these types of plays is just a routine for Mahomes. When Expected points have been added (EPA) Calculated for all third and fourth down games from 18 yards or more from 2009 to 2019, Mahomes is head and shoulders above all others.
The whole point of the proposed rule is to give teams better opportunities to mount a return – that is, to reduce the likelihood of a non-explosive strike. When the league changed the rules for kicks to reduce the chance of injury – which did exactly what they had to do – the changes also made it almost impossible to make a successful shot on board.
As is often the case, the proposed change is usually rooted in a competing league. AAF had a rule that gave the teams a chance to keep possession with a fourth and 12 game from their own line with 28 yards – but only if he is at least 17 behind or late by any amount with less than five minutes left in the game.
But according to the text of the rule change released by the NFL on Thursday, the proposed alternative NFL opt-out option could be used in whoever it is time; there is no language in which to claim that the team should follow. The only limitation is that a team can only try it twice in a game. Some confusion on this aspect of the proposed rule – like ours Pete Sweeney explained Friday morning,,
There is little confusion with Philadelphia Orly’s proposed rules.
The fourth and 15th rhythm alternative would NOT require a team to be at the end. I confirmed this with the league this morning. pic.twitter.com/ockIGEIw2D

So with what we could call Clause Mahomes, the proposed rule can be used in different ways. Suppose your team has just scored – and is 14-7 behind with 1:50 left in the second quarter. Your opponent has a start to the second half, so it allows them to make a quick score before the half and take the ball to start the second half is not attractive. If you have
elite defender Patrick Mohames – or a game call that you believe will catch your opponent off guard in situations four and 15 – you can take the gamble … as much as you ever chose this moment to try a surprising outside kick.
