Health officials warned pet owners not to buy, handle or feed their dogs any favors pig ears, including those that may already be in their homes.

As of July 31, at least 16 people became ill with salmonella after treating treats, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
"There are no suppliers identified, a distributor or a common brand of treatment for pig ears can be identified that can reflect any disease," health officials said.
There are 143 people infected with Salmonella strains in 35 states, health officials said. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. The young, the old and those with weakened immune systems could be seriously ill.
The treatment of porcine lice by a number of producers has already been recalled.
