In 1983, two years after their wedding, Prince Charles and Princess Diana embarked on their first tour together as a royal couple. With their young son Prince William towing, they traveled to Australia and New Zealand in an attempt to strengthen the country’s relations with the British Commonwealth. As season 4 of The crown broadcasts, they were welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawk, who was skeptical about whether the Prince of Wales could charm the nation, according to the BBC HistoryExtra magazine. To his (and Charles’s) surprise, Diana won the audience.

Although the trip proved to be a diplomatic success, The crownInterpretation of the tour highlighted personal inequalities on the way to Charles and Diana. He outraged society’s admiration for her as she became jealous of his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. Diana also had to take long steps to bring nine-month-old William with her and Charles abroad instead of being separated from him for the six-week trip. Her decision, which raised the queen’s eyebrows on the Netflix series, eventually set a new precedent in the family. As we have seen with modern royalty, Kate Middleton and Prince William brought Prince George on tour, while Megan Markle and Prince Harry brought their young son Archie.

Scroll through the photos here to see how The crownthe image of events compared to the real one. The show seems to have done great, recreating some of Diana’s most memorable looks from the trip.
