Pistons are signed by Jeremy Grant, sending Christian Wood to Rockets

The Rockets are still staring down at the target of James Harden’s commercial request. But they add someone who could help Harden win now or fit into recovery – Christian Wood.

All this because instead the Pistons are drawn to another player in front – Jeremy Grant.

Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports:

James Edwards of The Athletic:

It’s a ton to pay for Grant, but it’s easy to like. He plays hard, fearlessly defends the league star with small strikers and has the athletic flexibility to switch to other positions. He works hard to become a solid 3-point shooter.

As for a bigger offensive role … How will this happen in Detroit? The pistons have Blake Griffin in force forward. Dragging someone to the center with a small ball is difficult with so many traditional centers on the list. Is Detroit planning to make Grant an offensive small striker? This may require too much of his perimeter skills.

In addition to Grant’s own salary, signing it also requires a commitment of $ 2,866,667. for each of the next five years for the stretched Dewey Deadman, and probably $ 1,088,461 for each of the next five years for the stretched Rodney McGruder.

And the loss of Wood.

Wood is not a big name like Russell Westbrook (or before that, Chris Paul). But Wood must encourage Harden to stay in Houston.

Athletic and talented, Wood can make positive plays inside and out, both in insult and defense. He has performed well in every opportunity on the floor since not being drafted in 2015. He got his biggest role with the Pistons last season and is thriving, paying attention to the sixth man of the year. At only 25, Wood must continue to advance during this contract (although there are concerns about how he will fit into the Rocket culture).

Detroit and Houston could fold Wood-a-and-trade in a deal with Trevor Ariza. So, the Rockets do not have to send another player to match the salaries. Wood’s promotion justifies sending additional compensation for a piston project and accepting a hard cap that is triggered by acquiring someone in a sign-and-trade.

Denver is in a difficult position after it plans to re-sign Grant, who fits well between Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. Maybe now the Nuggets will re-sign their other option in Power Power Paul Millsap.
