Pixel 5 has not been released yet and Samsung has already beaten it

Today, Google officially announced the extremely expired Pixel 5. This is a wonderful device with a very great green coloring option and as an unrepentant fan of Google’s hardware, I am fighting against the desire to buy it. Honestly, only one thing stops me: Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition, launched early next month, is exactly the same price of $ 699. And on paper it is much better value.

Now yes, the Pixel 5 will no doubt take better pictures than the S20 FE. But in my experience with FE – I’ve been using it for about a week – it’s not dirty. It also has a telephoto lens, something Google decided not to include in the Pixel 5. And besides, pound for pound, the contender for Samsung in the upper middle class is just more of a phone.

Both devices can support 5G, but the S20 FE has Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 865, where the Pixel 5 is equipped with the smaller Snapdragon 765G. Both phones have high 1080p refresh rates, but Samsung’s is much larger, not to mention faster at 120Hz (up to the Pixel 90s). Both have wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, water resistance IP68 – the list goes on. And as much as I love Google’s funky choice this year, Samsung also beat it.

Thanks to Google, the Galaxy G20 FE’s six gigabytes of RAM rubbed me in the wrong way in 2020 – the Pixel 5 made it lick honestly and squarely in front with eight gigs. But in practice, I haven’t felt as much of a limitation as I don’t like in theory, and I think Samsung has absolutely nailed the price / performance ratio here, especially for a mass market device. Ask your mother how much RAM her phone has.

Pound for pound, the S20 FE is just more of a phone.

Of course, I didn’t use Pixel 5. I would probably like it; small phones are my jam. And there’s a dedicated team of fans, myself included, who adore Google for all its unique Googliness: playful industrial design, polished software, and enviable unique features. Although the company has always had difficulty competing with more established manufacturers of original products in high-end smartphones, consumers are turning to its more affordable options. In a year when so many people face financial uncertainty and most premium phones you can buy cost $ 2,000, a well-crafted upper-middle-class device for $ 699 looks like a home run.

But in the S20 FE, Samsung had the same idea – and did it in a way that would probably pay more people. The S20 FE doesn’t feel like a budget offer, but like a flagship with bone-in fat. People will certainly continue to buy the (totally excellent) Pixel 4a, but with the Pixel 5, Google seems to have a tough battle – again.
