Vatican City, January 9 (Reuters) – Pope Francis said Saturday that he was “amazed” by the US Capitol attack earlier this week by supporters of President Donald Trump, and condemned the violence as an attack on democracy.
“I was amazed because these are people who are so disciplined in democracy,” the pontiff of the Italian news channel Canale 5 said in his first public comment on the chaos in Washington.
“There is always something that doesn’t work … (c) people who take the path against the community, against democracy, against the common good,” he said. (Report by Crispian Balmer Writing by Giulio Piovaccari Edited by Peter Graff)
