Power Ranking: Players’ Championship

Max Homa, Patrick Reed, Tyrell Hatton, Patrick Cantley and Joaquin Neiman will be among the notable reviews on Fantasy Insider on Tuesday.

The traditional construction of 144 golfers for THE PLAYERS is heavier by 10, as it was recently decided by membership to include the first 125 in the FedExCup rankings for 2019-20. This is an annual entry criterion, but it has been replaced by a special list of points, which has been held since the beginning of the 2019-20 season during the World Golf Championship – Working Day at The Concession and Puerto Rico on 28 February.

Both criteria were used to grant access, but the 10 that ranked only in the top 125 in the FedExCup for 2019-20 are considered add-ons, so if there are withdrawals, it will not be replaced. (They are listed in the “Top 1

25 in the list of points for FedExCup for 2019-2020 in Inside the field.)

As champion in 2019, Rory McIlroy is the latest winner of the tournament. As such, he is the next to try to become the first to successfully defend himself at TPC Sawgrass. This is the 39th edition of the PLAYERS in the course. Although he is without a win from the WGC-HSBC Champions 16 months ago, his form is encouraging enough that he will have a reasonable move on consecutive titles; that is, if you subscribe to conventional thinking. Consider that of the last 10 defending champions, the 2018 winner, Web Simpson, is the only one to finish as strong as the top 55. He placed the T16 in 2019.

The fact that there was no golfer in TPC Sawgrass to go back to back helps to legitimize the fairness of the test. This is a stock of 72 and all 7189 yards have been screened. The primary rough is lush and trimmed to two and a half inches, while the Bermuda green TifEagle should reach 13 feet on the Stimpmeter. On his return to March after a dozen years in May, he averaged 71,513 in 2019. McIlroy’s pace of 16 to 272 was in line with history.

Due to the ubiquitous presence of the risk-reward component, experience determines most champions of this tournament. McIlroy contributed to this story by appearing nine times before taking the title. Since Tiger Woods won for the second time in 2013 – he won it for the first time in 2001, so he is the only winner in both March and May – Martin Kaimer, Ricky Fowler and Jason Day needed exactly five trips before connecting. Si Woo Kim surprised with his second appearance in 2017, but Simpson had eight starts under his belt before his victory.

Ball hitting is the other weapon that most winners have. Finally, McIlroy finished second in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, T3 in green in regulation, 11th near the hole and first in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green on the way to the title. He also led the field in the 3rd result.

Contrary to so many editions of PLAYERS in March, exceptional weather is forecast throughout the week. Passing clouds will not prevent the daily peaks from climbing in the low 70s. The main challenge will be the constant eastern breeze, but only gusts frighten golfers of this caliber, most sincerely to the known penultimate goal. Fair conditions in general can affect the urgency of noting, so the likelihood of taking a risk increases and this makes watching more compelling.

Speaking of which, Every shot live returned for the TOUR flagship event. As its name suggests, every shot from every golfer will be on camera and with visual enhancement, such as tracking balls.

As a reminder, if the winner is not determined in a regulation, a three-hole playoff consisting of cumulative scores on holes 16, 17 and 18 will be used to equalize the score. If they still get tangled after that, a traditional hole-by-hole playoff will be used, starting on the 17th and alternating with the 18th.

Last but not least, the prize pool is a record $ 15 million, of which $ 2.7 million is reserved for the champion. He will also receive 600 FedExCup points and a five-year membership waiver.
