In addition to the raw power and speed of the 1500 TRX – it is able to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds, making it the fastest pickup ever tested by MotorTrend – the judges also noted the high level of internal quality. on the truck and relatively advanced driving on the road.
TRX is really designed to outperform off-road. With its large wheels and tires, the truck’s body moves almost a meter from the ground. That’s two inches more ground clearance than the standard Ram 1500 all-wheel drive truck.
The TRX suspension system is specifically designed to handle heavy terrain at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The 1500 TRX includes a computerized “Jump Detection System”
Even when towing a large camping trailer, the TRX still moves from zero to 60 miles per hour faster than some of the other trucks in the race when they are not towing anything.
One of the criteria for the MotorTrend award is value. TRX won despite a starting price of over $ 70,000. The judges thought that the performance and characteristics of the truck, as well as the quality of its interior, which they compared with those in Audi and Mercedes-Benz cars, were worth the cost.
One problem, they noted,, was the fuel economy of the truck. TRX receives an EPA valued at 14 miles per gallon when driving on the highway and only 10 miles per gallon when driving in the city.
TRX’s biggest race, the high-performance Ford Raptor pickup, was not a contender for the MotorTrend award. To qualify for the Truck of the Year award, the pickup must be either a completely new model or substantially redesigned for the new model year. The Ford Raptor was last redesigned for the 2018 model year.
With its large V8 supercharged engine, the Ram TRX significantly outperforms the Raptor, which has a turbocharged V6 with 450 horsepower. However, Ford recently began production of a redesigned version of the F-150 pickup, on which the Raptor is based. The Raptor is expected to be introduced and redesigned soon.
In addition to TRX, the other finalists for this year’s award were Ford Super Duty, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier and Nissan Titan. The new F-150 was not included because it was not ready in time, a MotorTrend spokesman said.
The trucks underwent instrumental tests, the results of which were measured by computer-connected monitors. MotorTrend employees then drove all the contenders and met to discuss their impressions and vote for the winner.
The cars were evaluated on six criteria: safety, efficiency, value, design advances, engineering achievements and performance of the intended function, MotorTrend said.
