There are eruptions, and then there̵

7;s everything the Toronto Raptors just did to the Golden State Warriors. In 48 of the most inopportune minutes in NBA history, the Raptors defeated the Warriors 130-77. The end result does not justify the Raptors. In a quarter, Toronto led by only one. After three? They led with 53. In a period of 24 minutes, they managed to beat the Warriors by 52 points, or about 2.2 points per minute.

The third quarter was particularly humble. For five years, the Warriors were the best third-quarter team in NBA history. They outscored their opponents by a cumulative 1,640 points in the third quarter during the first five years of Steve Kerr’s rule. The Raptors overtook them 46-14 in this frame.

Open your books with records, reader, because a lot of NBA history was made in the eruption:

  • The 53-point victory was the 28th victory of that margin in league history. It was the biggest blow of the season, surpassing the Dallas Mavericks’ 51-point win over the Los Angeles Clippers, and not surprisingly, it was the biggest win margin in Raptors history. It was the biggest victory the NBA has seen since 2018.
  • At one point, the Raptors took the lead with 61 points. This is the biggest advantage that each team has had this season.
  • Gary Trent Jr. had a plus-minus of plus-54 and didn’t even play in the fourth quarter. This is the second best rating that each player has published since 1996, when the league began to follow him. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute holds the record at plus-57. Apparently, this means that Trent has set a record for the Raptors.

The Raptors came into the game with the 17th best difference in NBA points at minus-28. They now have the 13th best difference in points at plus-25. Despite their 19-30 record, the Raptors have a better point difference than the 29-18 Portland Trail Blazers. They are still 1.5 games behind the Chicago Bulls for last place in the Eastern Conference.

As for the Warriors? They deserve a little rest. Stephen Curry and Draymond Green both missed the game, and with Clay Thompson, who was already out for the season, the Warriors were not exactly able to cope with additional absences.

“We were just destroyed. Not much is said,” Kerr explained after the game. “Humiliating. For everyone involved.” The Warriors now lead the Sacramento Kings by just half a game for last place in the Western Conference.

It’s been a frustrating season for the Raptors since it came out in December. COVID-19 restrictions forced them to play in Tampa Bay. The lost depth of the front field, health problems, and bad luck in their clutch cost them their place at the top of the Eastern Conference. Main Norman Powell was traded, and team legend Kyle Lowry was also almost moved. But for one night in April, the Raptors looked like a contender again. They repeatedly beat Kerr’s incompetent warriors.
