Regeneron stopped enrolling critically ill patients with COVID-19 for antibody drug testing

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals stopped accepting critically ill patients with COVID-19 in its study, studying treatment with antibody cocktails given to President Trump earlier this month. The decision is due to potential safety concerns.

The drug manufacturer on Friday said discontinue admission of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 requiring high-flow oxygen or mechanical ventilation after an independent monitoring committee monitors a “potential safety signal and an unfavorable risk / benefit profile at this time”.

The enrollment of patients in this category will be delayed pending the collection and analysis of additional data.

Studies will continue to test the antibody cocktail in hospitalized patients requiring little or no additional oxygen. Other studies involving mild or moderately ill patients may also move forward.

The drug has shown encouraging results. Regeneron said Wednesday that early data showed that therapy reduced COVID-1

9-related medical visits by 57 percent.

Earlier this month, Regeneron asked the Food and Drug Administration for urgent approval and said it would provide doses to the American people free of charge. The drugmaker said there could be enough doses for 300,000 people in the coming months.

A study of Eli Lilly’s monoclonal antibodies in hospitalized patients was stopped on Monday after treatment was found to be of no benefit to patients with COVID-19.

Earlier this month, Trump received a single dose of 8 grams of Regeneron experimental treatment at the request of compassionate use and credited the drug to help him overcome the disease.
