The Dallas Mavericks are beginning to understand that. A loss to the Sixers stung on Thursday, but Dallas will end the month of February with a victory over the hottest team in the league. Even when Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant joined the game, it was a win that could give the Mavericks some momentum. James Harden scored 29 points and gave six assists, but that was not enough as Brooklyn’s eight-game series ended. Let’s look at some numbers:
9 Mavericks collect at least one theft
The Mavericks, who have only two players on average at least one theft per game this season, set up a defensive clinic tonight. The Nets and Mavericks have received grief for their defense this season, but tonight it seemed that each Maverick gave a lot of energy on this side of the court. This showed not only in Brooklyn, who made 1
Now Dallas is 14-0 in games where they lead after the first quarter
The Mavericks are proving that hot starts are becoming vital to their success. The 14 wins collected by Dallas, after the lead for the first quarter is the highest in the league. The Mavericks are once again struggling with clutch trouble, as they are ranked 20th in the clutch rankings this season. Fortunately for Dallas, their starts put them in a position to succeed.
The Mavericks are 11-2 when they make 14 or more threes this season
Dallas started its season with one of the ugliest shooting ranges I’ve ever seen. Sitting dead last with an efficiency of three points for most of the front of the chart, Dallas finally got out of that rut and found a rhythm of depth. The Mavericks will end the month of February without a game in which they have shot below 30% depth. This is something that happened in eight games during the month. If they can continue to strike at that speed, this 11-2 record will not be a scam.
