The chargers announced that Brandon Staley is their new head coach on Sunday night. As a former Rams defensive coordinator, Staley’s plan to develop a likely offensive rookie of the year, Justin Herbert, is paramount.
Apparently one part of the strategy could be to bring another Rams coach down 405 at Chargers headquarters.
According to Tom Pelisero of the NFL media, Rams’ offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell is Staley’s OK candidate. Although O’Connell is not calling for a game for the Aries, it would be a side move on paper, so head coach Sean McVeigh will have to approve of O’Connell’s departure.
McVeigh has a history in this regard. Before becoming Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur went from Rams offensive coordinator in 2017 to the same position as the Titans in 2018 to be able to call the game.
Pelisero reports that O’Connell and Staley are “very close.” But if O’Connell’s move to the charger in other cities is not approved, Staley could keep Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator.
O’Connell has just finished his first year as an Aries offensive coordinator after spending three years as an offensive assistant in Washington.
