Returnal receives its first major correction tomorrow, May 5th. But before that happens, developer Housemarque warns players to turn off auto-update, one of the PS5’s handy features, so they don’t lose progress. The planning will be launched at 12:00 PT / 15:00 ET.
The studio tweeted, telling players to turn off the feature and linking to Sony’s support page for instructions. It makes sense. If your PS5 is in stop mode when the update starts, it will automatically exit the game to apply the fix. If you were in the middle of a run when this happened, that progress would be lost.
To turn off automatic updates, you can go to Settings> Saved data and game / application settings> Automatic updates. There you can switch between automatic download and automatic installation when the console is in sleep mode.
Rest mode is one of the ways that Returnal players can take a break from running, as the game does not allow saves in the middle. This has led some fans to ask for a studio correction in a save feature, although some argue that this contradicts the meaning of the game. Either way, losing progress can seriously slow you down and the game is quite long anyway.
Returnal received a warm reception from critics, including in its own review of GameSpot 9/1
